» A New Bill Waterson Interview (!)

Considering that I just finished this book, it's amazing that this interview just came out today. (I love Calvin and Hobbes.)

» An Illuminated ESV

Makoto Fujimura is working on an illuminated bible. Unless it's ridiculously expensive, I'm getting one...in 2011.

The mechanics of Choose Your Own Adventure books make for an interesting read and some strangely beautiful charts.

» Is the NEA pushing propaganda?

"The NEA did encourage a handpicked, pro-Obama arts group to address issues under contentious national debate. That fact is irrefutable."  Read more here.

» Prodigal God

For a limited time, you can download an EP of free music from a new musical called "Prodigal God" here. It's not directly related to the supposed-to-be-great Keller book, if you're wondering. (via BTW)

Read about Reading Rainbow is going off the air here. Which focus will do more for increasing literacy: teaching how to read or teaching why to read? Discuss. (via Waxy)

Bret's 2008 Retrospective Music Mix

Wednesday 24 December 2008 at 08:41 am. Used tags:

As in years past (and as mentioned in my previous post), it’s time for my 2008 music mix. The idea is not that it be a “best of” list like you’d see from a music critic. It’s intended to just be a forum for reflection and the sharing of recent listening habits. The guidelines and my list are after the jump, and please leave a list of your own in the comments…

Guidelines:

  1. You can only include songs that you purchased or that were purchased for you in 2008 (or since your 2007 list, if you made one). The songs do not have to be from albums released in 2008. No free downloads or songs from magazine samplers or things like that…
  2. You cannot include more than one song from any album.
  3. Feel free to add whatever types of comments you’d like.
  4. List your choices something like this to make it clear: Artist – Album Title – Song Title.

Bret’s 2008 Retrospective Music Mix:
  • Bodies of Water – Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink – These Are The Eyes
  • Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago – Skinny Love
  • Burial – Untrue – Etched Headplate : one of these things is not like the others…but it has grown on me
  • Django Reinhardt – The Indispensible Django Reinhardt 1949-1950 – Minor Swing : almost impossible to choose between the 40+ songs
  • Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal : hard to pick between this and Blue Ridge Mountains
  • Fleet Foxes – Sun Giant EP – Mykonos
  • Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova – Once Soundtrack – When Your Mind’s Made Up
  • Harrod & Funck – Live – Tidewater
  • John Fahey – Return of the Repressed: Anthology – On The Sunny Side Of The Ocean : or In Christ There Is No East Or West…again, it’s almost impossible to choose between 40+ songs
  • Josh Ritter – The Animal Years – Girl In The War
  • Morphine – Cure For Pain – In Spite Of Me : try I’m Free Now for something more representative
  • Neutral Milk Hotel – In The Aeroplane Over The Sea – King of Carrot Flowers, Part I
  • Portishead – Third – The Rip
  • Shearwater – Palo Santo – Seventy-four, Seventy-five
  • Sun Kil Moon – April – Unlit Hallway : some other good songs on this one, but too long for a mix
  • The National – Boxer – Fake Empire
  • TV On The Radio – Return To Cookie Mountain – Wolf Like Me
  • Wilco – Being There – Someone Else’s Song
Special Mentions:
  • The Decemberists – The Tain : it’s all one big song suite, so it seems weird to choose just one part of it
  • Havalina Rail Company: We Remember Anarchy : freely-downloadable retrospective of a fun band…get it here .
  • Miles Davis – Bitches Brew : I don’t think it’s possible to fit a song from this album in with the others here without inducing sonic whiplash
What have you been listening to in 2008? Let us know in the comments…
